Yes?

Let’s get started.

I’m Emily de la Pena, an award-winning business woman, educator and business coach. I took a leap of faith from my career as a civil engineer and started my own business, Coding Kids, teaching children to code.

I know what it’s like to have a passion and interest that you want to share with the world, whilst at the same time, trying to make sense of how to turn this into a successful business, whether you’re a family-focused business or a children’s activity provider.

I also know what it’s like to invest your time and money into starting your own business, a business that is based on your values and serving your student communities, but also realising that passion and service is not enough to be the effective business owner that you need to be.

You’ve come to the right place.

I know how to support you to grow and thrive as an effective business owner and level-up your business success to match your passion and service you have for your community.

I know what it’s like

After spending over a decade building a successful career as a civil engineer, I took a leap of faith and started my own business in this aspirational field of children’s development. I had been volunteering at kids coding clubs on the weekend after being inspired by the potential I saw in coding to empower kids. It was free for students and parents, but it was exhausting doing it for free. I was compelled to pursue my passion in helping to inspire the next generation of creators, innovators and change makers.

January 2016, after developing a business plan, I started my own children’s coding club business. Initially it was significant effort, combined with some learning on the go. I was running classes, preparing fun and interesting lesson plans, give my best customer service and responding to phone calls and emails from parents and schools, doing all the admin and accounting, designing, printing and posting flyers for schools, updating the website every term and managing spreadsheets of all my classes and students. I was creating job ads and hiring and training staff to be my assistant in classes. I was communicating with schools to confirm room bookings. I was running 12 classes a week with over a hundred students and it was getting hectic.

Importantly, I did learn from those efforts and my business took shape. Now my company runs over 50 classes a week (including live, online classes) with a team of 20 instructors. We have expanded to South-East Asia and the Middle East. Locally, as a Brisbane-based company we have delivered our programs all around Queensland  and Australia, including the Torres Strait Islands, Longreach, Mt Isa, Thargomindah, Charters Towers and more.

I’ve been appointed onto the Queensland Premier’s Anti-Cyberbullying Advisory Committee and awarded Advance Queensland Community Digital Champion 2016/2017/2018. I’ve been awarded 40 Under 40: Top Young Entrepreneurs Brisbane 2016 & 2017, Queensland Pearcey Entrepreneur Award, Queensland Women in Leadership Award 2018, and winner of the What's On 4 Kids Award.

I’ve been on ABC Radio Brisbane, SBS Radio, The Courier-Mail and various Australian newspapers to discuss the value of children learning to code and the changing nature or jobs and industry.
